Perched high on the top of Hathorne Hill in what was once the village of Salem, Danvers State Insane Asylum was, for more than a century, a monument to modern psychiatry and the myriad advances in mental health treatment. 

After working in asylums for nearly three decades, Valerie Martin is set to retire but one phone call changes everything and she finds herself on a train bound for Northampton and the asylum where her career began on the wards in 1959.

Anna Gilman is at the top of her class in graduate school and is about to start her internship in psychiatric nursing at Westborough State Hospital; however, when she arrives, her supervisor, Valerie Martin, warns her not to settle in.
